Free Radicals Are Aging You Fast, But Antioxidants Stop the Hands of Time

Free Radicals

Free Radicals

Free radicals are any atom, or molecule that has an unpaired electron in its outer shell. If that means nothing to you right now, you will appreciate just how important the removal of free radicals from your body is momentarily. Free radicals are highly reactive to the other cells in your body. They are like scavengers, causing oxidative damage in everything from your skin, to your brain to your liver. While we need oxygen to survive, oxidation is what happens when atoms in an element lose electrons. In non-scientific speak, it is also what happens when you leave an apple or an avocado out on the counter. Who wants to eat a brown Granny Smith apple or some graying guacamole?

The same way that oxidation turns these foods, living biological organisms, into a wilting, unappealing mess, they wreck havoc on our own bodies. They cause disease and premature aging. Anti-oxidants do the exact opposite. They inhibit the oxidation of molecules in our bodies.

Combat Free Radicals with Anti-oxidants

Antioxidants are found in plenty of fruits and vegetables. Antioxidants are essentially vitamins, nutrients and other important minerals that help cells repair, instead of die off too quickly. The healthier your cells are, the healthier you are. Foods are assigned an ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) value, which means they are either high or low in antioxidants. Foods given the highest ORAC value, also have the highest level of antioxidants. Foods highest in vitamins in minerals also have the highest levels of antioxidants.

Vitamins and minerals not only reduce the damage of free radicals via the reversal of the oxidation process, but they also boost the immune system, and keep us from aging so quickly.

Top 3 Antioxidants

Three major antioxidants, and thus life-saving, age-defying components are in the Vitamins C and E as well as in Beta Carotene. Just these three antioxidants (there are dozens more) can be found in myriad foods as follows:

Vitamin C: Chia seeds, Goji berries, strawberries, raspberries, citrus fruits like lemons,

Vitamin E: Sunflower seeds, almonds, red chili peppers, basil, sage, thyme, parsley, cumin, oregano, pine nuts, peanuts, apricots, green olives, cooked spinach, taro root, and more.

Beta Carotene: carrots, kale, sweet potatoes, turnip and mustard greens, kale, basil, parsley, marjoram, oregano, sage, coriander, butternut squash, lettuce, and more.

Go a Step Further to Combat Free Radicals

Additional foods which rank on the top 100 list of high ORAC value foods include: ground cloves, sumac, cinnamon, sorghum, oregano, turmeric, acai berries, coca powder and cumin seeds.

If you really want to stop the clock on aging and disease, you need to eat more of these foods in every meal. You can eat these foods raw, cook them, or juice them in green juices to get all your nutrients down the hatch in a concentrated form. Just be sure to buy organic as often as possible, especially if you are going to juice, so that you don’t ingest pesticides that can cause you to age faster, and even develop cancerous cells.

In short, free radicals can make you old, sick, tired, and wrinkly, but antioxidants can give you the glow of a seventeen year old and the energy of someone half your current age.
